It’s no secret, I love pro wrestling. I make sure that it’s the first thing new people know about me because well, it’s a huge part of my life. Like everyone else, I have my own opinions about who I think is great, what promotion is delivering an excellent product, and whose event I’m looking forward to watching or attending. I keep an eye on talent everywhere, and I thought it would be cool if I shared a spotlight on wrestlers who I am a fan of and made more people aware of them. And for my first Wrestling Spotlight, I will be exhibiting a wrestler whose career I’ve followed for ten years, Barrington Hughes.
Around 2010/2011 I used to attend wrestling shows at an independent promotion in Miami called ICW (Independent Championship Wrestling). That was the first time that I ever saw Barrington Hughes. Out comes this big 470-pound black man who looks like he is just about to murder everyone in the room. I’ve followed Hughes’ career ever since as he would toss his opponents across the ring and crush them. He moved slowly around the ring, taking his time to stalk his prey, or maybe he was just giving them a moment to comprehend the ass-whooping they were about to receive by delivering his finisher, the Ode to Blanche Devereaux which is an Ura Nage into an Anaconda Vice. Since ICW, Hughes has gone on to wrestle promotions all over the country including promotions such as Future of Wrestling, NWA Ring Warriors, Ronin Pro Wrestling, and MLW.
Hughes’ style can be described as an old-school brawler with flashes of showmanship. You can witness more of his style in his fatal 4-way match at Fest: We are Family 2019 against Beastly, Effy, and Ultra Violette. One can see the showcases of showmanship in the way Hughes’ no-sells his opponents attacking him. His counterparts are confused on how to take down such a huge menacing force. The psychology of the match switches to “How can we get this roadblock of a person out of the picture?” and everyone makes an attempt to chop the tree down. Hughes’ ruthlessness can be seen when a failed attempt of offense by Ulta Violette results in Hughes easily holding her above his head and launching her into the other two competitors for more damage. He lands a devastating powerbomb with Effy, displaying his power. Hughes successfully presents himself as a powerhouse in this match catapulting his name even further in the consciousness of wrestling fans.
Barrington Hughes is impressive and wiith the world slowly opening back up, we can excitably wait for Barrington Hughes to make more towns again with his signature style. I know that I will be keeping an eye out. I was able to get a few minutes to sit down and talk with Hughes in regards to his career, his love of gaming, and his plans for the future. Check it out in the video below!
